Pretérito indefinido and imperfecto

Indefinido is a finished event: ayer fui, compré, llegué. Imperfecto is the background: era de noche, hacía calor, estaba cerrado. A B1 story needs both. If everything is in the imperfect, nothing happens.

Examples

Ayer estaba en el museo y compraba un libro.

Ayer estuve en el museo y compré un libro. Hacía frío.

Finished actions in the indefinido. Weather in the imperfecto.

Cuando llegué, la tienda ya estaba cerrada.

The arrival is a point. The closed shop is the state I found.
